Watch and Manage Your Auction Listings with Auction Management Software

by Stacey Kirsch on February 4, 2010

As the popularity of online auctions grows each year, and billions of dollars in revenue pour in, casual sellers are finding a market for items they no longer want.  Old jewelry, ill-fitting clothes, new shoes that don’t really fit, cars – all manner of items goes up for auction, and these occasional sellers can make a profit.  It is a virtual yard sale.

But there are also vendors who depend on virtual auctions for some or all of their revenue.  For these sellers, it is far too time-consuming to manually list each item, monitor the bidding, update inventory, and ship products.  Auction management software is a powerful tool and can help make business more efficient and profitable.

Sellers can easily become overwhelmed with the myriad details of running an online auction business.  Listing is only the beginning: you must have effective inventory maintenance, and handle labeling, packing, tracking payments, settling accounts, providing answers to customer inquiries, and more.  All of this begins anew whenever you list another item, and some sellers have hundreds or thousands of items.  It would be virtually impossible to oversee all of this manually, especially if you are your only employee.

Good software organizes all the data you need so you can easily and quickly access it when you want.  You don’t have to scramble around searching for information in various files or documents; it is in one centralized location, which makes it a must for large volume sellers.

Besides simply being able to monitor and manage your listings, you can also find programs, such as Auction Wizard, that have built-in image editing, image hosting, FTP (file transfer protocol for the safe transfer of data) and HTML modules, and email services.  They may also automatically relist items that did not sell and alert you when you are low in inventory.   You do not have to buy supplemental software in order to get your auction listings out to the public.  This saves time and money.

Would you benefit from this type of software?  If you are one of the casual sellers, it will not be necessary.  You can certainly enter all the required information in manually and take care of post-auction tasks, like shipping without help.  If you list multiple items and depend on online sales, it may be well worth it to spend a little money on a solid software package so you have more time to focus on other aspects of your business.  It is like hiring another employee, only much less costly.

In Info World, a leading resource for IT experts, Lori Mitchell wrote, “Many companies wonder when and why they should use online auctions as part of their business trading strategy.  The short answer is, if you sell goods and services or if you purchase items to run your business, online auctions can work for you….Companies of practically any size and within any industry can benefit from them.”

And these businesses would certainly benefit from the help of a reliable software program that will handle much of the inventory management, listing duties, and post-sales tasks.  You can even get auction templates to help.
